The 10 Commandments Of Self-Maintenance For Women

Self-care is something everyone should practice, but there are a few important things that us ladies in particular must take care of to optimise our well-being.

Here are the 10 Commandments of Self-Maintenance For Women:

  1. Book your smear test

If you live in the UK there is no excuse since us ladies are lucky enough to book this in for FREE. There is nothing comfortable, fun or exciting about having our lady parts examined, however it is only every 3 years for those between the ages of 25-49 years old and crucial in avoiding risk of cervical cancer.

  2. Breast awareness

The NHS say there is no specific way to check your breasts however you should know how the normally look and feel. It’s usually the easiest to do this in the shower with soapy hands running them over your breasts, armpits and collarbone. Click here for further advice

  3. Get a blood test

Blood tests are a great way to check the overall function of your physical well-being and any deficiencies. Most physicians advise getting a blood test once a year.

  4. Dental Care

Maintain that beautiful smile of yours with regular check ups at the dentist. You should visit the hygienist every three to six months for a thorough clean.

  5. Fresh Underwear

It’s recommended that your bra might need replacing after six-nine months. With good care your bras should last longer, say, one year or more depending on how often you wear them.

Get a few on rotation to minimise wear and tear. If you feel your bras are no longer giving you the support you need, get a new one.

  6. Clean Nails

You don’t have to be a regular at the nail salon for well kept hands and feet although there is a world of difference when done by a professional.

Whether you book yourself in for a mani/pedi or in the mood for a little DIY, a little upkeep on your hand and foot health is a small step in making yourself feel better.

  7. Glossy Hair

Maintain strong, healthy, glossy locks by looking after your hair.

Deep conditioning, steam caps, treatments, and regular trims are a good way to look after your hair to keep it growing healthy and strong.

Wear a silk or satin bonnet or pillowcase when going to bed to avoid friction between your hair and the cotton of the pillow, this will reduce hair breakage and retain moisture.

  8. Replace Makeup/Clean brushes

Over time makeup brushes grow bacteria and fungus. Give your makeup brushes a good wash every week, to reduce the chances of this happening. As long as you’re washing your brushes often, there’s no need to have to replace them.

Good quality brushes can last for decades. Replace old makeup that has gone clumpy or dry such as mascara, which should be replaced every three months.

  9. Facials and Spas

Take care of the skin you’re in with facials and spa days, not only are they a good way to get glowing skin it’s a chance to relax and zone out at the same time. If getting a facial is out of pocket right now, go to your local beauty store, pick up some face and eye masks and recreate a spa setting at home.

  10. Prioritise ‘me time

It’s difficult to take care of yourself physically when you feel drained mentally. Always find time for yourself, it doesn’t have to be a whole day, just a couple of hours where it’s just you in your own company.

This could be in the morning before you start work, when you get in from work, once the kids have gone to bed or on the weekends.

    Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential.
