In a world where so many are desperate to ‘fit in’, being yourself has somewhat become a superpower.

Societal conformity is nothing new, but with aspects such as social media being a main point of influence, it is challenging now more than ever to live as your true self. This notion of suppressing who you really are to be seen as popular, desirable and successful leads to a lot of regret later down the line when you suddenly realise trying to be somebody you are not is a waste of time and energy.

By living this way you risk living your entire life not being true to you only to be faced with regret much later down the line.

However, by following these tips, you can learn how to live as your authentic self and find greater meaning and purpose in your life.

1. Identify Your Values and Beliefs

Think about what your values and morals are? What do you stand for? What is most important to you? How would you improve the world if you had it your way? Once you understand your core values and beliefs, you can develop a stronger sense of self and make decisions that align with your true self.

2. Embrace Your Strengths and Weaknesses

It’s important to embrace both your strengths and weaknesses. We all have areas where we excel and areas where we are a work in progress, this is very normal and part of the human experience, and it's equally important you accept and celebrate both. By doing you gain greater self-awareness and a huge boost in your confidence. Instead of striving for perfection, strive for progress.

3. Express Yourself

The truth is we are all someone different in various scenarios and among different groups of people. Who we are might differ slightly for example, who we are in front of work colleagues on a Monday will look different to who we are among our friends on a Saturday night.

Despite these adjustments, it’s important to not make these changes so drastic that you feel as though you are not being yourself.

Find ways to express your true self, this may involve pursuing creative endeavours, dressing in a way that reflects your style, or speaking up for what you believe in.

4. Set Boundaries

Communicating your boundaries clearly to others about what your morals and values are will do you a great service in terms of gaining respect for standing by who you are. Implementing setting boundaries does not mean shutting others out completely or even the means to be rude. It means finding a healthy balance between your own needs and the needs of others and not wavering out of a fear of not fitting in or people pleasing. This can involve saying no to social events which you don’t want to attend, advancements in relationships that you are not comfortable with and other situations that don't align with your values or taking time for yourself when you need it. Setting boundaries can protect your emotional and physical wellbeing, and ultimately, live a life that is true to you.

5. Practice Self-Care

Self-care is not just about getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and engaging in activities that bring you joy. It also involves taking the time to connect with yourself, and deliver on your life’s purpose. This may include practicing mindfulness, meditation, journaling, going for a walk or listening to music that makes you feel good. When you prioritise self-care in all areas of your life, you boost our mood, reducing stress and gaining a deeper sense of clarity in those areas.

6. Surround Yourself with Genuine People

Living authentically can be challenging, especially if you feel like you don't fit in with the people around you or perhaps you feel as though the people around you are not being their genuine selves making it difficult to connect on a level. Surround yourself with genuine people who even through their growing stages are true to themselves and most importantly accept you for who you are and encourage you to be your best self.

7. Take Risks

Don’t be afraid to take risks. Greatness comes from outside of your comfort zone, so challenge yourself by heading in a direction which forces you to grow i happens outside of This may involve pursuing a new career, moving to a new city, or trying a new hobby. By taking risks, you can gain new experiences and insights, and discover new passions and talents.

However, by identifying your values and beliefs, embracing your strengths and weaknesses, expressing yourself, setting boundaries, practicing self-care, surrounding yourself with supportive people, and taking risks, you can learn how to live as your authentic self and find greater meaning and purpose in your life.
