How to BANISH Under-Eye Wrinkles Fast!

Commonly known as ‘crows feet’, under eye wrinkles are probably the most common sign of aging that can be frustrating to deal with. These changes in our appearance tend to make us look much older and much more tired than we actually might be.

And while we should embrace the aging process, let’s face it (no pun intended), no one wants to look as though they’re closer to our pensions than what we truly are.

I’ve been lucky enough to reach my mid-thirties and keep my under eye wrinkles at bay so much to the point, I still sometimes get asked for my ID when trying to buy a bottle of wine. and as annoying as that can be when you just want to do a quick vino run, there are many benefits to taking care of your under eyes and I’m going to share what’s always worked for me.

What Causes Under Eye Wrinkles?

Before we get into what you can do to minimise under-eye wrinkles, it’s important to understand what you can do prevent doing any further damage.

Age

As previously mentioned, although we can slow down the aging process, we cannot stop it. As you age, your skin naturally becomes less elastic and more prone to wrinkles. This is because as you get older, your body produces less collagen and elastin, which are two important proteins that keep your skin looking firm and youthful.

Sun Exposure

Giving us our daily boost of serotonin, sunlight is the good mood bestie we all know and love, However, overexposure to the sun's UV rays can cause damage to your skin, case more lines under your eyes, and speed up the aging process.

To my black and other deeply melanated girlies who still believe ‘black doesn’t crack’ please use this term loosely because we certainly do.

At a much slower rate, but still enough to realise the sun has its limits with us too.

It’s not just the sunlight which can cause wrinkles, office lights, the light which radiates off your phone and other rays if too close for long period of time can have a effect on your skin, particularly around your eyes.

Dehydration

The same way a plant starts to look limp and tired when it hasn’t been watered is the same process which happens with our skin. When your body is dehydrated, your skin is more prone to dryness which eventually lead to wrinkles. This is because your skin needs water to stay hydrated and plump.

Smoking

Those pesky little sticks are so impactful not only your health but also to your skin. What smoking does to your skin is damage the elastin and collagen which keeps it nice and firm. The effects of smoking also add to a dull and lifeless complexion taking away the glow and brightness around your eyes.

Genetics

Sometimes it really is just down to your genetics and this can also play a role developing under eye wrinkles. If your parents or grandparents noticeably have under eye wrinkles, you may be more likely to develop them as well. This doesn’t mean you cannot improve the appearance of them.

How to Minimize Under Eye Wrinkles

So now that we understand the causes, let’s start looking at what you can do to minimise and improve your under eye wrinkles entirely.

1. Hydration

Drinking is the best and the most cost-effective enough water is essential for maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin. When your body is dehydrated, your skin can appear dry and wrinkled. Aim to drink at least 2L of water a day to start seeing improvement in your skin and particularly around your eyes.

2. Get Enough Sleep

Do not sleep, on how much sleep you must get in order to improve the appearance of the skin around your eyes. Getting a good nights sleep is imperative for a number of health benefits such as reducing stress, an increase in productivity and even weight loss.

When you're sleep-deprived, your body produces more cortisol resulting in raising your stress levels, and once again breaking down the collagen and elastin in your skin and guess where you’ll notice those effects happening on a physical level, in your eyes.

Aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night to give your body the rest it needs to repair and rejuvenate your skin.

4. Use a Gentle Eye Cream

My favourite way of taking care of my under eye wrinkles is to use beauty products. I’m a huge love of skincare and makeup, it makes me feel good and I incorporate it into my self-care every single day.

Using a gentle eye cream particularly at night when the air cools down can help to hydrate the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The Kiehls Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado is so lush and super rich in texture which is just what your under eye is craving for.

When applying your eye cream, remember to apply a light amount of pressure using your ring finger, as this finger is the weakest and will apply the right amount of pressure to the delicate skin around your eyes.

One thing I do often to add moisture and hydration to my eye area is apply eye masks (I’m wearing a pair as I type this now).

They’re a brilliant way to feed the skin around your eyes and you apply them at any time, while you’re working from home, watching TV, on flight, before you go to bed.

My go-to eye masks are the Pixi DetoxifEYE Depuffing Patches which are gorgeous for cooling down puffiness and refreshing your eyes, also the Mizon Phyto Plump Collagen Eye Gel Patches.

Eye masks are really the most convenient way of looking after your eyes and minimising and peeping lines.

5. Quit Smoking

If you smoke, quitting can have a significant impact on the appearance of your skin. Smoking causes many negative effects to your skin including wrinkles and age spots. Try to reduce and even top smoking as a way to prevent any further damage to your skin, particularly the skin under your eyes.

6. Eat a Healthy Diet

What you consume on the inside will inevitably show on the outside, even through your skin. Eating a healthy diet that is rich in fruits, and vegetables will work wonders for your skin. These nutrient dense foods are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that can help to protect the skin from damage and keep it looking youthful.

Final Thoughts

It's never too late to start taking care of your skin. Start now, add these tips into your lifestyle, and you’ll soon start to notice a change in what you see.
