How To Become THAT GIRL This Year
When you picture that girl, what kind of woman comes to mind? For me, I imagine someone who carries herself with elegance, confidence, and purpose.
A woman who prioritises her wellness creates her lifestyle with intention and emits an inner glow that draws people in. But the truth is, becoming that girl isn’t a superficial transformation, it’s about building a life that feels authentic and aligned with who you really are.
My own journey of becoming that girl, hasn’t always been a walk in the park, but the small, intentional changes I’ve made have completely transformed how I show up for myself.
From experimenting with different styles to finding consistency in my routine as a form of self-love, these changes have created a life of purpose and somewhat luxury.
In this article, I’ll share the five pillars that have shaped my style, self-maintenance, fitness, healthy eating, and learning processes.
Making Your Style Iconic
My interest in fashion and style started from as early as age 15. I remember being in school and everyone was having their 16th birthday parties so we needed multiple outfits I didn’t like anything they were selling at the time so I would draw what I wanted to wear.
It was usually something way too revealing and inappropriate for a girl of my age but at that age, we thought we were grown women lol!
But most importantly this memory reminds me how much style is the most visible way we express who we are, and it can be a powerful tool for transformation.
My style journey has always included stepping outside my comfort zone with colours, textures, and prints has been one of the most exciting ways to embrace my evolving identity.
Experiment boldly: As much as I love clean lines and neutral tones, I think it’s also a shame the fun has been lost in fashion. Where has the drama gone?
Make fashion fun again! Start introducing bold colours like emerald green and cobalt blue into your wardrobe. Explore faux furs and embellishment. Will this draw attention to you? Yes. but you’re also ‘that girl’ we wouldn’t expect anything less.
Mix textures: Don’t be afraid to pair leather with satin or a cashmere cardigan with light-wash denim. Adding unexpected textures to your outfit can make it feel polished and unique.
Personalise your staples: While having classic pieces like a tailored blazer or a little black dress is important, you can make them feel like “you” by adding a statement belt, bold jewellery, or a pop of colour.
Play with prints and silhouettes: Whether it’s an oversized blazer or a zebra-print midi skirt, pushing the boundaries of your usual style can spark creativity and confidence.
Your style should be a reflection of who you are and who you’re becoming. The more you explore, the more you’ll uncover what truly makes you feel like that girl.
Prioritising Self-Maintenance
To become ‘that girl’ take a look at that routine, both physically and mentally. Despite its concept gaining popularity on social media self-maintenance isn’t about vanity, it’s about honouring yourself through consistent and often very important rituals that make you feel your best.
Skincare that works for you: A glowing complexion doesn’t happen overnight, but with a consistent morning and nighttime routine, you’ll see improvements. My go-to skincare routine includes double cleansing, a hydrating serum, and SPF (Yes, even for my fellow black girlies. Black might not crack but it does age. If you want to slow down the process even further I would suggest you start incorporating sun protection into your skincare routine immediately.
Hair care upgrades: I recently invested in a silk pillowcase and started doing weekly deep conditions. The result? Shinier, healthier and thicker hair that makes me feel confident even on low-maintenance days.
Manicures and grooming: Polished nails, fresh brows, and smooth skin are small but powerful details. Bi-weekly appointments are a part of my routine, and they make me feel instantly more refined. Remember to include blood tests, trips to the hygienist for a thorough dental clean, and appointments with the nurse to check your lady parts.
When you care for yourself with intention, it creates a ripple effect in every area of your life. You’ll feel more grounded, radiant, and aligned with the version of you that you’re becoming. If this sounds overwhelming, download my guide here to help stay on top of your routine.
Finding The Importance in a Fitness Routine
Fitness is one of the most transformative habits I’ve incorporated into my life.
And I won’t pretend it’s not about having a particular type of body, of course it is. However, I’ve also realised the multiple benefits there are when that’s not the only focus.
Creating a sense of strength and energy that carries you through each day with confidence is a fast track to feeling like ‘that girl’.
Explore fitness as self-expression: I fell in love with Pilates because it allows me to tap into my feminine energy, it makes me feel strong. Whether it’s dance, yoga, or weight training or walking, find a workout that resonates with you.
Set goals that excite you: Instead of obsessing over the scale, I focus on how my body feels. Can I hold a plank longer? Am I more energised throughout the day? Do I get a better night’s sleep? These wins are far more fulfilling.
Romanticise your workouts: Let’s face it, the best part of taking up a new hobby is the new outfits and equipment. Chic workout sets, a beautifully curated playlist, or a cosy post-workout smoothie ritual can make fitness feel like an indulgent experience rather than a chore.
Daily movement matters: On busier days, I still find time for a quick walk or some light stretching. Consistency, even in small doses, is where the magic happens.
Fitness is a form of self-respect, and it’s one of the most empowering ways to step into that girl energy.
Eating with Intention and Balance
Healthy eating is less about restriction and more about choosing foods that make you feel your best.
Shift your mindset to view food as nourishment for your body and soul, and you will soon see a complete transformation in your energy levels and confidence.
Prioritise whole foods: My daily meals revolve around colourful vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. A breakfast of Greek yoghurt and Heather honey is my favourite way to start the day. It’s simple and easy to repeat.
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, this also works wonders for glowing skin.
Mindful indulgences: Instead of depriving myself, I enjoy treats with intention. I have a sweet tooth for candy and desserts but I enjoy them fully without guilt. Don’t feel guilty for enjoying what you like, instead create a way where you are eating in balance. The 80/20 rule tends to work well in this instance.
Incorporate supplements: Collagen powder, magnesium and probiotics have become staples in my routine, helping to support my skin, hair, and overall well-being.
When you nourish your body with intention, it becomes a reflection of the love and care you’re giving yourself.
Staying in School
Becoming that girl isn’t just about how you look, it’s about how you think.
Continuously educating yourself and expanding your perspective is what will set you apart and help you embody the best version of yourself.
Consume inspiring content: I’ve started replacing endless scrolling on Instagram with podcasts, audiobooks, and YouTube videos that align with my goals. This has been a game-changer for my mindset.
Develop a new skill: How can you develop upon what you already know? What are you passionate about? What interests do you have? Can you build upon this knowledge? Not necessarily to create a career out of, just for the sake of knowing. Take online courses, and sign up for programs that will help you reach the next level of you.
Read with intention: Build your library with a diverse selection of books that elevate your mindset and help you escape the real world.
Last year I read everything from Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Dr. Joe Dispenza to Only for The Week by Natasha Bishop (a romantic summer read).
A woman who projects herself to be ‘that girl’ can not only read a person, but she reads in real life to extend her mind and vocabulary making it easier for her to move comfortably in any social group.
Surround yourself with growth-minded people: Whether it’s a mastermind group, an inspiring mentor, or even friends who push you to be your best, your environment matters more than you think.
Investing in your mind is the most important thing you can do for yourself. It’s what truly transforms you into someone who radiates wisdom and confidence.
Finally
Becoming that girl is a journey, not a destination. It’s about the daily choices you make to honour your highest self and build a life of elegance, joy, and purpose.
By experimenting with your style, committing to self-maintenance, staying consistent with fitness, nourishing your body, and expanding your mind, you’re laying the foundation for a life that feels as good as it looks.
Remember, that girl isn’t someone else you need to become, she’s already within you. All it takes is for you to step into her shoes and live each day as the woman you’re becoming.
